News on Ancrum Bridge

ADHS have been working on the Ancrum Old Bridge Project for over two years.

The Society are pleased to announce that an oak timber sample, taken from the bridge remains in the River Teviot, has been dated to the 1300s.

This puts the bridge in the same medieval landscape as the Bishops Palace (The Mantle Walls) and links it to Jedburgh and the Border on the 'Via Regis' or Kings Road.

HES, who have funded parts of the Ancrum Old Bridge (AOB) Project, have been keen to publicise the importance of the discovery and dating of the bridge remains.

A joint press release with ADHS was released today (29th Oct) (HES release)explaining how the bridge was found and the significance of the radiocarbon dating.
