Timelines

Archaeologists and Historians like to break up the past into chunks of time categorised by events and technologies. If you have ever heard someone talk about what happened in the 'Stone Age' or during the 'Second World War', you may have come across some of these time periods.

As different events and technological advancements occured at different times in different countries, the time periods used here really only represent Scotland (although the Romans were active in England too). They also represent the Scottish Borders in particular - as different groups lived in different regions, like the Anglo-Saxons and the Picts. To read more about the history of the Scottish Borders head to the Medieval Borders page before doing this activity.

Activity

Below are a series of images that represent different time periods. See if you can put them in order! Write down the number of the image you think represents the most recent time period, then the next most recent and so on until you have all the images accounted for! When you're ready - scroll down for the answers!

**Teachers, if doing this as a class activity, you could ask pupils to stand up to represent each of these items and have members of the rest of the class give suggestions on which order they should stand in! Then, when the majority of the class has agreed, scroll down for the answers!
