Returned and Blessed

“The Ancrum Hogback Stone is an incredibly important reminder of the village’s central role in Scotland’s medieval politics and religion. When the stone was first placed over an unknown person of status sometime in the 11th or 12th centuries, Scotland was in the throes of determining its future as, an independent kingdom. Ancrum sat, both physically and metaphorically, at the crossroads of this development. Along with the recently discovered palace belonging to the Bishops of Glasgow, the stone represents the power and influence of Ancrum and Teviotdale in the critical debates and battles that led to Scotland becoming Scotland.

When I last saw the Hogback stone being lifted from the churchyard in 2018 I never thought the next photo I saw of it would be so incredible, I am amazed"

ADHs welcomed at host of people to the churchyard to witness the unveiling and blessing of the Hogback stone. After 4 years it is finally back where it belongs.

A warm welcome and a little history from ADHS

Unveiling of the stone by Debbie and Annabel Crawford (daughter and granddaughter of Richard Strathie)

Mrs Liz Findlay blessed the stone and gave thanks to all who helped with this project.

A piper from the Jed legion Pipe Band played a lament to the stone

At last a look up close

It is the end of a chapter in the Ancrum Hogback's restoration and conservation, although, it is not the end of the story. We are now starting the process of fundraising for the next phase, which is to position an interpretation board at the churchyard detailing the sites around this area. Along with a weatherproof cover for the stone which will allow it to be viewed all year round.

If you feel you can help in any way with this please get in touch through the buttons at the bottom of the page.

Thank you ADHS
