We are pleased to announce the successful completion of both initiatives, culminating in the conclusion of the Hog Back restoration and protection project. This marks a significant milestone in the restoration and conservation of the Ancrum Hog Back stone. The society subsequently initiated fundraising for the next phase, which includes the installation of an interpretation board in the churchyard that details the surrounding sites, as well as a weatherproof cover for the stone to ensure its visibility throughout the year.
The interpretation board was completed efficiently, thanks to a grant from the council, which facilitated the process, and the artistic skills of Ellie Thomson, along with Stuart Anderson from Fantasy Prints for their assistance in printing and delivery. The cover presented more challenges, as we were unable to use toughened glass due to restrictions. Despite our efforts, funding was not available, leading us to adopt an alternative plan to raise the necessary funds ourselves.
In late August 2024, we were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming support from the public and community. We established a target fundraiser and kicked off our efforts with a BBQ hosted by Karen Vallance at her home in September, with all proceeds directed towards the fundraiser. Additionally, we organized a calendar, which had not been produced in the village for several years. This initiative proved to be a tremendous success, generating orders from various regions, including the Highlands, Lowlands, and even the USA.
In November, we raffled our last calendar during our winter talk, and at the December talk, we raffled a Christmas hamper, partially funded by The Ancrum Pantry, which raised a significant amount. Our final fundraiser for 2024 involved a "guess the weight of the Christmas cake" contest, generously baked and donated by Caroline Hendry.
By the start of 2025, we were pleased to confirm that we had sufficient funds to commission a specially designed polycarbonate cover for the stone. We extend our gratitude to Stuart for his measuring and delivery efforts, and to Michael Sneddon for his installation work.
We sincerely appreciate the invaluable contributions of everyone involved. Thank you for your support and dedication.
